BEACH HUT ROW OVER RATES RUMBLES ON

Storm brewing on the beach

Battling beach hut owners will be arguing with council bosses over the massive hike in ground rent the gazette can reveal.

Hundreds of members of the Seaview and Ryde beach hut association packed into the Puck pool café last night (Monday April 26) and formed a committee to take on the Isle of Wight council over the rates rise.

With Brenda Wade being elected as Chairman the association also formed a fighting fund to help. Members who attended the meeting last night were asked to put one pound into a sandcastle bucket to build up funds for the fight.

Charges are set to rise from less than £75 to £400 plus over the next four years, leaving hut owners aghast.

Cllr David Knowles, who described the hike as ‘outrageous’, said both he and Seaview councilor Reg Barry who both attended the meeting last night had received complaints from many of the 212 hut owners.

  1. These people should get real.
    They are Cheapskates!
£75 to rent a seafront beach hut for a year????????
There are long waiting lists for these huts because these people are getting a great facility for less than £100.
Many south coast resorts charge their beach hut users £700- £800 a year or more.
Private beach huts like those in Ventnor have to charge £50 a week to make a living.
Pay up or give it up and let the Council get value for money from those waiting for these huts.
I’m sure those waiting for these huts would be prepared to pay £400 a year.
