ONE IN CUSTODY AFTER NEWPORT HIT AND RUN

THE GAZETTE can reveal that the red car that Island police have been searching for after the hit and run in Newport has been recovered.

Neighbours described how the normally quiet cul-du-sac off the Broadway in the Sandown area was swarming with police on Sunday morning.

“Six police cars from Fareham turned up in the road” said homemaker Liz Jacobs. ”The police went to the front door of my neighbour who owns the car, but he wasn’t in.”

The red car was taken away on the back of a recovery truck.

The recovered car, believed to be a red Nissan Mirca, is now undergoing forensic examination by police.

A 28-year-old Sandown man has since handed himself into Newport Police station and is helping police with their enquiries.

A spokeswoman for Hampshire and IW Police confirmed that they had recovered a vehicle in relation to the incident, but would not speculate if this was the vehicle involved in the Trafalgar Road incident.

The spokeswoman went on to confirm that a man had been arrested after handing himself in and is currently being questioned by detectives.

A 41-year-old Newport still remains in a critical condition in the Wessex neurological unit at Southampton General Hospital after being mown down by a vehicle that failed to stop in the early hours of Sunday morning (November 15).

Officers are continuing to appeal for anyone who saw what happened or saw any vehicles in the area at the time of the incident to come forward.

Anyone with information should contact Sgt Rob Heard on 101, quoting Operation Tricot or call the charity Crimestoppers line anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Callers from outside Hampshire and the Isle of Wight should use 0845 045 4545.
