A passenger who was travelling in a red Mazda 121 is in a critical condition after the vehicle is believed to have hit a verge and flipped on to it roof in a road traffic accident near Bembridge.
The accident happened on Longslands Shute and Sandown Road on the outskirts Bembridge just after 3.10pm this afternoon (Tuesday December 7)
The 73 year old female driver was freed by passing motorists who stopped to help at the scene before emergency services arrived. Fire fighters from Bembridge, Sandown and Newport battled to free the trapped passenger, an 93-year-old pensioner.
Specialist spreaders from the Rescue tender had to be used to free the woman who had become pinned in the vehicle.
Both pensioners were treated by an IW ambulance solo paramedic before the passenger was airlifted by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital.
The driver was treated at the scene and taken to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport by ambulance with injuries described as serious.
Officers from the Shanklin Road Policing unit are at the scene and have been for a number of hours. PC Houghton said” The road is likely to remain closed for the next four to five hours whilst we investigate how the car managed to end up in the middle of the road on its roof.
Officers of the Road Policing Department’s Crash Investigation Unit have travelled from the mainland to help their colleagues find the cause. A lighting was also brought in to light the scene to assist officers.
WPC Peni Houghton from RPU issued an appeal at the scene asking any drivers who may have witnessed the incident and who hadn’t already given their details to a police officer to contact her by calling 101(Outside of Hampshire and IW caller’s should uses 08450454545) and quote operation “Prunella”
