MOTORCYCLIST DIES AFTER MIDDLE ROAD CRASH

A 45-year-old motorcyclist from Cowes has died this evening after the machine he was riding crashed into the side of a car.

The collision happened shortly after 5.15pm this evening (Wednesday March 16) on the Middle Road, Calbourne.

An elderly women in her 70s from East Cowes, who was driving the car involved within the collision, is not believed to be seriously injured.

The Gazette has learnt from hospital sources that the biker was suffering from internal bleeding at the time of his admission and hospital staff battled to safe the man’s life and performed an emergency operation within the casualty department to try and stop the bleeding, but were unsuccessful.

A passing care worker stopped at the scene outside The Sun Inn, Calbourne and rendered first aid on the injured biker, after alerting the emergency services.

Police have closed the road between Elm Lane and Lynch Lane in both directions.

Officers from the Roads Policing Unit are working with colleagues from the Collision Investigation Team to piece together what happened to cause the collision.

Police are advising motorists that road diversions in the area are likely to be in place until at least midnight.
