Prison kitchens at HMP Isle of Wight have been rated cleaner than those at some top hotels on the Island.
The Food Standards Agency’s new Food Hygiene Rating System, which launched last week, awarded HMP Isle of Wight five out of a possible five stars; however Michelin-starred restaurant and hotel ‘The Hamborough’ received only two out of five.
The new catering facility, which serves the three prisons Parkhurst, Camp Hill and Albany, has had a state-of-the-art Silverline ventilated ceiling system installed to provide robust ventilation from a single unit which incorporates air supply and integral lighting, all aiding good food hygiene.
It’s not just the food hygiene that the prison is keeping on top of - the ceiling incorporates a comprehensive lock down facility, whereby all grease filters and ceiling panels are secured by means of key operated locks preventing the inmates from gaining access to the ceiling void.
Other hotels such as the Priory Bay Hotel and the Lakeside Park Hotel also scored poorly, compared to results seen by fast food restaurant McDonalds, who also scored 5 out of 5 stars at their Ryde branch.
