BOAT SAILS INTO HEDGE IN NEWPORT
A SPEEDBOAT ended up sailing into a hedge and blocking Long Lane this lunchtime when it became uncoupled from its mooring as it was being towed by a BMW 4×4.
The trailer on which the speedboat was being transported came out of its anchor point and the boat and trailer went up a verge and landed in a hedge, blocking the road.
The boat was being towed from Cowes to Bembridge by its owner when the accident occurred at just after 12.30pm today.
The shocked owner, who did not wish to be named, described watching the boat in his rear view miror as it slipped away from the back of his vehicle.
“Hopefully I will be able to get the trailer repaired as we planned to use the boat this weekend at Bembridge,” he said.
Police officers from the Shanklin Roads Policing unit attended the scene and closed the road to enable recovery of the 5.8 meter speedboat.
Local contractors who were carrying out works on behalf of Southern Electric were passing the scene and set up traffic lights after part of the road carriageway was blocked.
Barletts vehicle recovery winched the trailer from the hedge and recovered it on a flatbed.
