SUPERMARKET chain Asda has said it will create 450 new jobs on the Island when a new store that is due to built in Newport is completed in 2012.
The UK grocers, which are owned by US retail giant Wal-Mart, is due to make an announcement on Friday via the Isle of Wight Council on the new location of the store believed to be on the outskirts of Newport.
The Gazette has learnt that Councillor George Brown, deputy leader for the IW Council, has been at the forefront of negotiations to secure what is being described by one source as healthy capital for the land.
It is believed that, subject to planning permission, the supermarket giant plans to build a 45,000 sq ft store with a petrol station and café.
