A man is fighting for his life after a car crashed into a tree “The Gazette” can reveal.

The 33-year-old suffered serious head injuries and a fractured pelvis in the smash when a blue Mazda 323 hit a tree in Brading and ended up in a ditch.

Island fire crews from Newport and Sandown stations helped to free the trapped man from car by removing the door using cutting equipment just after 09.30 this morning Saturday January 8.

The injured man was treated at the scene by Isle of Wight ambulance service rapid response Paramedics and taken by land ambulance to St Mary’s hospital to be stabilized.

The driver who is believed to have suffered serious life threating injuries was later transfer by Hampshire and IW air ambulance to Southampton General hospital.

Officers from the Island Roads Policing team have launched an investigation into how and why the driver lost control of the vehicle.

A Specialist collision investigation officer based at Winchester has spent most of the afternoon taking measurement and carrying out tests at the crash scene.

PC Martin Norman from the RPU based at Shanklin who is in charge of the investigation said “I would like to speak to anyone who saw the collision or the vehicle just prior to it leaving the road I am appealing for witnesses to the crash which happened on Bullys Hill near to the view point just after 9.20 this morning.

The vehicle was travelling from Newport towards Brading at the time of the collision.

The road was closed just after 9.30 this morning whilst the driver was freed from the vehicle.

A spokesman for Hampshire and IW Police Control said the closure is likely to remain in place for a number of hours.
