Island Police are appealing for witnesses after a Seven Acres patient collided with the main entrance of St. Mary’s Hospital in Newport on the Isle of Wight.

As exclusively reported by ‘The Gazette’, a red Peugeot 406 estate rammed into the main entrance of the hospital between 8am and 8.20am on Saturday (March 26).

Thankfully no one was injured; however the collision caused several thousands of pounds of damage.

The 41-year-old man from Ryde, who was a registered patient at Seven Acres at the time, is believed to have been detained under the Mental Health Act and was taken to Newport police station. He was later bailed until May 5, 2011 pending further enquiries.

Investigating Officer PC Paul Neill of the Isle of Wight’s Targeted Patrol teams (TPT) said: “Police responded to reports on Saturday morning that a car had collided with the main entrance at St. Mary’s Hospital. Thankfully there were no reports of injuries, but the collision could have had far more serious consequences as there were hospital staff, patients and visitors nearby.

“I’d like to thank hospital staff for all their assistance. Enquiries are continuing and we’re keen for any information from witnesses who saw the collision or a red Peugeot 406 estate being driven in the Newport area at around 8am on Saturday morning.
