A Island musician, whose performance of hit song Kung Fu Fighter prompted a police complaint of alleged racial abuse, won’t face any further police action, it was confirmed tonight.
34-year-old Simon Ledger, from Shanklin, returned to Newport Police Station this afternoon to answer his bail.
After being interviewed by detectives on suspicion of causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress under section 4A of the Public Order Act 1986, Ledger was released with no further action due to insufficient evidence to confirm any criminal offence had been committed.
Ledger was arrested on Sunday after playing the classic tune ‘Kung Foo Fighting’ at the Driftwood Beach Bar in Sandown as two Chinese citizens walked past.
Ironically, Mr Ledger - a popular Island musician - was arrested at a Chinese restaurant later that day.
A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabularysaid: “Anyone who perceives they are the victim of a racially aggravated crime is entitled to make a report to the police.
“We will treat such allegations seriously to provide reassurance for victims and to protect the integrity of appropriate lines of enquiry.”
In a twist of events, ‘The Sun’ newspaper is now coming under scrutiny from Police for using the word ‘wong’, in a story that ‘The Gazette’ broke first and which has now gone world wide.
