Rescue teams were this evening scrambled to search The Needles area of the West Wight in a search and rescue operation in connection with a missing man.
The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team were called in to carry out a cliff-side search of Tennyson Down, while the Freshwater Independent Lifeboat searched the waters surrounding the infamous Needles lighthouse.
The search and rescue operation, which has been suspended for tonight, was carried out in connection with missing 45-year-old Ian David Lanfear.
Initially both lifeboats were launched from Freshwater, however as conditions worsened, the independent station’s D-Class lifeboat was returned to base.
The Sussex Police helicopter, which also serves the Isle of Wight, carried out a partial search of the cliff and beach area in Freshwater and the surrounding area.
Mr Lanfear was last seen this morning (Sunday April 3) as he left his home in Victoria Road, Freshwater, Isle of Wight.
He is described as 5ft 8″ and of slim build, with short ,tidy, receeding hair and was last seen wearing navy blue jeans, a brown waterproof jacket, dark shoes and a scarf.
Police have issued an appeal following Mr Lanfear’s disappearance and are treating it as a high priority. It is believed he is in a vulnerable condition.
