PIER CLOSURE COULD BE UNTIL CHRISTMAS
THE ISLAND’S Ryde Pier could be closed until December, The Gazette can reveal after Wightlink bosses issued a banning order to all vehicles.
The safety scare was sparked during a routine maintenance inspection when engineers found serious safety structure issues within the structure of the 200 year old twin spires pier on Tuesday afternoon (August 3).
A Wightlink source who spoke to The Gazette said “The bosses are very worried as the amount of money the pier takes in parking and the fee for the taxis to pick up is loads. But it’s got to put the safety of the passengers first. They are trying to get people in to fix it as soon as possible but we have been told that it might not be done before this side of Christmas.
They are trying to do a deal with the Ice rink and the council. It’s gonna have a massive effect on customers. They went on say some of the regulars have been demanding their money back over the season tickets as they aren’t very happy about the new arrangements for parking.
The single line train service is not effected by the scare as the railway lines run on a different part of the structure.
